How To Use - Support Insurance Calculator

Many separated moms and dads are required to secure their monthly support payments in their Separation / Divorce Agreement, Divorce Order or Court Order. Rebalancing Beneficiaries Support Insurance (RBSI) allows a life insurance policy to secure those payments, while allowing additional beneficiaries such as children or a new partner to be included on the policy as rebalancing beneficiaries as support payments are made.

  1. Determine your monthly support obligations and check the appropriate support payment boxes. Enter your monthly Child Support (A), Children’s Special Expenses (B), Children’s Future Special Expenses (C), Alimony or Spousal Support payments (D), or any other Debt / Expense payments (E), etc. you are required to pay your ex-spouse or ex-partner.
  2. For Child Support make sure you enter the number of years and months you’re required to pay support for each child according to your Agreement, Divorce Order or Court Order (example: 9 Years, 6 Months).
  3. The calculator allows you to estimate your budgeted share of your Children’s Special Expenses and Children’s Future Special Expenses (College, University, Special Needs, etc.). Enter the estimated monthly amount per child and the number of years and months for support. For example: if your share for the estimated future costs for college / university is $8,000 per year for 4 years, and you have 2 children, your share would total $64,000. Determine how many years and months it will take to save your share of the expense for each child, and enter the monthly amount and number of years and months. You may need to readjust the monthly amount or the number of years and months a few times until you reach your correct budget. When there are fewer years to save, increase your monthly budget. Remember, the budget is the amount you’re required to contribute, not the total amount for your child’s Future Special Expenses.
  4. Once you’ve completed the requirements for A, B, C, D or E, use the COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) Calculator to adjust for inflationary costs or increased support obligations for future increased wages or income.
  5. The calculator will provide a suggested amount of insurance required, however, the minimum support insurance is $50,000 and may be purchased in $1,000 increments. An increased insurance amount and other beneficiaries may be added to the policy.
  6. Critical Illness Insurance is a form of health insurance protection that provides a lump sum benefit should you survive a serious illness or medical condition covered by your policy. Illnesses such as Cancer, Heart Attack or Stroke can have a significant impact on you, your ex-spouse or partner and your children, financially and emotionally. Critical Illness coverage provides a lump sum payment to help with your expenses and support obligations covering 1 or 2 years of support obligations. You can even increase the amount of Critical Illness Insurance to cover your own personal requirements in addition to your agreed to or court ordered support obligations. Minimum Critical Illness coverage is $25,000.
